  • January 15 Primary – update

There’s a bunch of news on the January 15 primary, none of it yet reported in the MSM.  I’ll post just an outline now, with details to follow. First, they have decided NOT to appeal Judge Edmunds’s decision, but will let it become final.  The deadline for filing an appeal is apparently April 28, but…

  • Michigan partisan changes 1996-2006

An article I wrote for MIRS, which has been mentioned in a couple of posts:  This analysis looks at the change in Democratic share of bottom-of-ticket state-wide education posts, comparing the presidential and gubernatorial elections of 1996 & 1998 to those of 2004 & 2006. Over the course of the past decade, Michigan’s political landscape…

  • NEWS FLASH – Jan 15 Primary Statute Unconstitutional!

Judge Nancy Edmunds declares statute unconstitutional – opinion will be posted when available here.  We have no indication at this time whether the State will appeal.  In a filing last week, they informed the Court that if she voided the statute, they would refuse to release the information, claiming the election sort of never took place.

  • Do-Over – How it might still be done.

With each wasted opportunity, the options become narrower, but I think there’s still a possible method for a partial salvage of the mess in Michigan and Florida.  The successive failures we’ve endured have not been the result of a lack of options, but the result of the MDP’s inability to discriminate between workable and unworkable…

  • FLASH! Draft Re-Do bill is out

Same details as have been previously mentioned, with a few twists: 1) abolishes May School elections 2) abolishes changes election process for precinct delegates  3) all lists will be public – INCLUDING JAN 15 LIST 4) no cross-check requirement, but participants must affirm they haven’t participated in any other party’s nominating process. What’s the deal they’ve given…

  • Fantasy of Privately-funded/Publicly-conducted Do-Over

According to the Detroit News, the current scheme for salvaging Michigan’s representation in Denver calls upon the legislature  to immediately adopt legislation (not yet written) to hold a June 3 presidential primary.  Apparently, the MDP’s task farce, consisting of Sen. Levin, Debbie Dingell, Cong. Kilpatrick and Ron Gettelfinger, has given up, and decided to wrap things…

  • Florida Draft Vote-By-Mail plan for Re-Do

Here it is – poached from the Miami Herald, via MyDD.com. Since the DNC is the real force pushing for a re-do in both states, it wouldn’t surprise me if the plan in Michigan shares some features.  I have to say the Florida plan includes some good ideas, including opening store-front voting centers in low-income areas. …

  • Thank You Chris Dodd!

Thank You Chris Dodd! It appears the cacophony of voices is moving for a heavily modified version of Mark Grebner’s plan for a do over primary through mail-in ballots. Levin, Granholm, and even Bill Nelson of Florida are expected to push this plan to the state Democratic Party pretty soon. However, another voice has joined…

  • Michigan Primary Part 2: Who Cares?

This Michigan Primary situation has gone from bad to worse.  It was bad enough that the Legislature, fully aware of the candidates’ decisions to boycott our state and the censorship from both the Republican and Democratic parties, decided to spend over $10 million of our dollars on this January 15th mistake, and then withhold the…

  • A plan for holding a new Democratic Presidential Caucus – by mail.

This is a condensed, updated, version of the plan I submitted to Mark Brewer in 2003, which served as the basis for the MDP’s 2004 Caucus.  As I envision it, this proposal has a number of pluses:  1) It would invite very wide participation.  2) It would provide a high level of security.  3) It…
